Google Simplifies Gemini Model Picker on Web

As of May 13, 2025, Google has streamlined the model picker in the Gemini app on the web to improve user experience. The changes are primarily for Gemini Advanced subscribers:

  • 2.0 Flash: Fast all-around help
  • 2.5 Flash (preview): Next-generation reasoning model built for speed
  • 2.5 Pro (preview): Enhanced capabilities in reasoning, math, and code
  • 2.0 Flash with Search history: Personalized assistance based on user history

Previously available options like 'Deep Research with 2.5 Pro' and 'Veo 2' have been removed from the model picker. Instead, these features are now accessible via the prompt bar. A new addition called 'Video' has also been introduced, which was in testing since late April. The 'Canvas' feature, which recently received a new icon, is also available.

On wide desktop screens, all three main options are visible, while mobile users can access additional options through a three-dot overflow button. There have been no changes to the Gemini app on Android or iOS devices.

This update aims to simplify the model picker and highlight the capabilities of the Gemini app more effectively. Free accounts have not yet seen these changes. Google plans to integrate personalization features into all models in the future, and the 2.0 Flash model is expected to be phased out once the 2.5 models exit preview status.
