Google Tightens Security: Google Wallet Now Requires Frequent Verification for Tap-to-Pay Transactions

Google Wallet 'Verify It’s You' Request After Phone Unlock
Users have recently observed that Google is requiring device unlocks for every tap-to-pay transaction, regardless of the amount. Additionally, Google Wallet seems to be testing a new feature where verification is needed more frequently.
Google states that credit and debit cards will not be charged unless a recent verification method, such as a fingerprint or PIN, has been used. However, users have noticed that the duration considered 'recent' has become shorter. For instance, when making a purchase at a supermarket, a user found they had to re-authenticate after just three minutes of unlocking their phone.
Testing with a timer revealed that on one Pixel 8 device, a prompt for verification appeared within three minutes of unlocking, while this behavior was not observed on other Pixel devices. This suggests that Google may still be testing or has yet to roll out the change widely.
In comparison, Apple Pay requires authentication for every tap-to-pay transaction, and Google Wallet is moving closer to this approach but still offers more flexibility.
