Google Translate Now Shines as the Default Translation App on iOS

Google Translate can now be set as the default translation app on iOS, giving users more control over their device settings.

Google Translate can now be set as the default translation app on iOS devices running iOS 18.4 or later. This update, detailed in Google Translate’s release notes, allows users to change their default translation app via Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Translation. Previously, iOS users were limited to Apple's built-in Translate app for system-wide translations through features like Siri and text selection popups. The introduction of this feature is a response to regulatory pressure from the European Union, particularly the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires tech companies like Apple to provide more user choice and control over default apps. While these changes are mandated by EU regulations, Apple has implemented them globally in an effort to preempt further legal challenges.
