Google TV Enforces 'Free TV' Shortcut on All New Remotes Starting April 2025

Google is making a significant change to Google TV remotes by requiring a 'Free TV' shortcut, enhancing quick access to free live TV channels that have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from users.

Google TV Remotes to Feature ‘Free TV’ Shortcut by April 2025

Google is implementing a new requirement for Google TV remotes, effective April 2025. New devices will be mandated to include a 'Free TV' or 'Live TV' shortcut button on their remotes. This move comes as part of Google's ongoing push to enhance the 'Freeplay' experience, which offers users free live TV channels.

Google has received positive feedback from users regarding these free content options, including local news, popular shows, and movies. The company states that this change is aimed at providing a consistent user experience with easy access to free TV content.

Walmart's Onn Pro streaming box, which debuted last year, already features a prominent 'Free TV' button on its remote. Other devices, like the recently released Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen), do not have this shortcut but were launched before the new requirement took effect. Google TV’s reference designs typically include a Live TV shortcut, so many devices will naturally comply with the new mandate.
