Google Unveils Emotional Material 3 Expressive Redesign for Android 16
At The Android Show: I/O Edition, Google announced a significant Material 3 Expressive redesign for Android 16, set to roll out later this year starting on Pixel devices. This redesign aims to bring more emotion and engagement to the user interface with natural, springy animations, satisfying haptic feedback, and background blur in the Quick Settings and Notifications panel. The new design language features updated components, emphasized typography, and dynamic color themes, all while maintaining performance and battery life.
Key changes include a revamped lockscreen layout, live updates for delivery, rideshare, and navigation alerts on the lockscreen and AOD, new status bar icons, and a more compact At a Glance widget on the homescreen. The Quick Settings panel introduces blur effects, resizable tiles, and blockier sliders for brightness and volume.
The redesign also extends to Google apps like Keep and Gemini widgets, leveraging fifteen new or updated components and a new Motion-physics system for fluid and natural interactions. Typography styles are enhanced to emphasize information hierarchy, and 35 new shapes support smooth transitions and dynamic designs. Developers can use these expressive tactics to guide user attention more effectively.
