Google Unveils Internal Testing of New ‘AI Mode’ for Smarter Search Results

Early Look at Google's New Search ‘AI Mode’
Google has started testing a new 'AI Mode' for its Search engine, powered by Gemini 2.0. This mode is designed to handle more open-ended and exploratory questions that are not well-served by traditional search results. It aims to provide users with AI-generated overviews and easy-to-digest information, along with links to further explore the topic.
Testing Phase
The testing phase is currently limited to Google employees, who have been invited to try out this new feature through an internal email. The company describes AI Mode as a way for Search to 'intelligently research for you,' organizing information into clear and concise breakdowns.
Use Cases
Google has provided some example queries that AI Mode is designed to handle:
- "How many boxes of spaghetti should I buy to feed 6 adults and 10 children, and have enough for seconds?"
- "Compare wool, down, and synthetic jackets in terms of insulation, water resistance, and durability"
- "What do I need to get started with aquascaping?" Follow-up: "What are some nearby stores to buy supplies?"
User Interface
The user interface for AI Mode is still in development but includes a chatbot-like experience. When users type a query, an 'AI Mode' option appears alongside the traditional search filters (Images, News, Shopping). This leads to a fullscreen UI with the answer and a text field at the bottom for follow-up questions. The mobile app versions also support voice input.
Future Plans
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has hinted that 2025 will be a significant year for Search innovation, suggesting that AI Mode might launch this year after internal testing.
