Google Rolls Out Pixel Camera 9.8

March 2025 Feature Drop

  • Smaller Update: Google is rolling out a smaller update, Pixel Camera 9.8, as part of the March 2025 Feature Drop.
  • Rollout Timeline: The update will take some time to reach all users.

New Features

  • Astrophotography Animation Toggle: A new setting in Settings > Advanced allows users to turn on or off an animation for Astrophotography. This feature is enabled by default and retains the previous behavior.
  • Palm Timer Clarification: Google clarifies that the Palm timer ("raise your hand" feature) works with the rear camera.

Device-Specific Features

  • Pixel Fold: Dual Screen Preview is now available when recording video, and Add Me can appear on the external display of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
  • Pixel 9 Series: Users can use the remote Connected Cameras capability to capture or live stream with supported camera applications using remote cameras. This feature works with devices like the Pixel 6+ and GoPro 10 and later models (with the latest software).

Supported Applications

  • The update supports popular social media apps such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok.

Additional Features

  • Device Connectivity Service: An update to this app may be required for Connected Cameras to work.
  • Cross-Devices Services: This feature is part of Cross-devices services, including Call casting and Internet sharing.
  • Camera Picker: A floating pill-shaped container that allows users to add, remove, or disconnect a remote camera, as well as switch between the device and a remote camera.

Usage Notes

  • You can only connect to devices signed in with your Google Account.
  • Only one remote camera can be connected at a time.
  • Audio is sourced from the currently used camera.
  • Using a Bluetooth audio source may degrade streaming quality.

Availability

  • The update is available via the Google Play Store or can be sideloaded manually.
