Google Wallet Embraces Aliro: Smart Locks Get a Secure, Flexible Upgrade on Android and Wear OS

In November 2023, the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) introduced Aliro, a new standard for smart locks. Google Wallet is now adding support for this protocol, which will allow users to interact with Aliro-compliant devices via NFC on Android phones and Wear OS. Aliro is designed to simplify integration, offer flexibility in installation, enhance security, and ensure interoperability between different manufacturers' devices. The CSA, known for the Matter standard in smart homes, mentions that Aliro uses NFC, Bluetooth LE, and UWB technologies. Key companies supporting Aliro include Google, Apple, Samsung, and Qualcomm, among others. While the support is now available with version 25.11 of Play services, it may take some time for certified locks to become widely available.
