Google's Play Books Gets Material You Makeover, Finally

Google's Play Books app finally gets a Material You redesign, bringing a refreshed look with pill-shaped elements and updated navigation.

Material You Redesign for Google Play Books

  • Overview: Google has launched a Material You redesign for the Google Play Books app, bringing it in line with other apps that have undergone similar updates.
  • Version and Availability: Version 2024.2.9.0 is now rolling out via the Play Store. The update was initially spotted in February but became widely available in March.
  • Design Changes:
    • Search Bar: A new pill-shaped search bar has been introduced.
    • Bottom Navigation: The bottom navigation bar features a pill-shaped tab indicator, similar to Google Home and Photos.
    • Navigation Rail: Updated for Android tablets and foldables in the Material 3 style.
    • Library Tab: Carousels have changed from pills to rounded rectangles, while buttons have gone the opposite direction. A dark theme bug affects the top tabs in the Library.
    • Wishlist and Shop Tabs: Modernized with no changes to the reading view or settings.
  • Theming:
    • Uses the default blue accent without Dynamic Color, although the account menu is properly themed.
  • Pending Updates: Other Google apps like Authenticator, Classroom, and Play Games are still awaiting Material You redesigns.
