Google Redesigns Gemini Overlay and Homepage for Android

Google is rolling out a significant redesign of the Gemini overlay and homepage on Android devices. The new design makes the overlay smaller, simplifying it to include only essential features:

  • Plus Menu: Access Camera and Gallery.
  • Ask Gemini Field: Tap for text input.
  • Microphone: Voice input with a vibrant blue/purple glow when active.
  • Gemini Live Shortcut: Moved inside the container.

The redesign removes the split-screen multitasking handle, the full Gemini app open button, and the greeting message. The text field expands as you transcribe speech, and suggestion chips are now left-aligned.

Changes to Gemini App Homepage

  • Camera and Voice Input: Now accessed via the plus menu.
  • Microphone Glow Ring: Active when using voice input.
  • Files and Drive Upload: Available for Gemini Advanced subscribers.
  • Ask Gemini Field: A pill-shaped field in the app, while the overlay uses a rounded rectangle.

This redesign is now rolling out to all users with Google app version 16.2.40, available on the Play Store. It has been confirmed on various devices including Samsung and the Pixel Tablet.
