HomeKit Setup Simplified: Tap-to-Pair and Multi-Device QR Codes Arrive with Matter 1.4.1 Update

Simplifying smart home setups: The latest Matter standard update introduces tap-to-pair and multi-device QR codes, making HomeKit device configuration faster and easier.

Simplified HomeKit Setup with Tap-to-Pair and Multi-Device QR Codes

An upcoming update to the Matter standard, version 1.4.1, aims to make setting up HomeKit-compatible smart home devices easier. This update introduces two key features: tap-to-pair and multi-device QR codes.

Tap-to-Pair

Tap-to-pair allows users to simply tap a device against their iPhone to add it to the Home app. While this feature has been supported by HomeKit, it has not been widely adopted by manufacturers. The new Matter standard formally includes this feature, which should encourage more companies to implement it.

Multi-Device QR Codes

Multi-device QR codes will simplify the setup process for multi-packs of devices like smart light bulbs. Instead of scanning individual QR codes for each bulb, users can scan a single code to set up all the bulbs at once, while still retaining individual control over each device.

Background on Matter and HomeKit

Matter is an open standard that ensures compatibility with multiple smart home platforms, including HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. This eliminates the need for manufacturers to comply with Apple-specific standards or submit devices for approval. As of the beginning of this year, all Matter devices automatically receive the Works With Apple Home badge.

Additional Improvements

The update also addresses other setup annoyances, such as requiring users to open manufacturer apps to agree to terms and conditions. These steps can now be completed directly in the commissioner app (e.g., the Apple Home app), streamlining the process further.

Availability

While these features are part of the latest Matter standard, it will take time for them to be implemented by manufacturers and available in products on the market.
