How 'The Studio' Used Continuous Takes to Dodge Apple TV+ Executive Notes

Seth Rogen's new Apple TV+ show, The Studio, uses the unique format of shooting scenes in continuous takes to fend off unwanted feedback from studio execs.

Summary of The Studio: A New Apple TV+ Hit

This week, The Studio, a new show on Apple TV+, has gained significant traction, impressing critics and climbing to the #2 spot on Apple’s top charts, just behind Severance. Co-creator and star Seth Rogen revealed in an interview with Variety how the show's unique production style helped him navigate creative control.

Oners: A Shield Against Executive Interference

One of the key elements of The Studio is its use of 'oners'—scenes shot in continuous takes without cuts. This technique not only adds to the stress and absurdity of the show but also serves as a strategic way to avoid unwanted feedback from Apple execs.

Rogen explained, ‘Because of the way we shot it, essentially nothing could be done after the episode. Apple would give us notes, but the answer was always “We can’t do that.”’ This method effectively shielded the creative team from making changes they didn't want to implement.

Securing Celebrity Cameos

Another interesting aspect of The Studio is its inclusion of numerous celebrity cameos, including Charlize Theron, Paul Dano, and Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. Despite Apple’s initial skepticism about securing these high-profile appearances, Rogen and his team managed to pull it off.

‘Apple was very skeptical and worried,’ Rogen said. ‘They said early on, “You will never be able to get all the cameos you need to make this show.” But clearly, they were wrong.’

The success of The Studio in securing these cameos could potentially attract even more Hollywood talent for future seasons.

Availability and More from Apple TV+

Apple TV+ is available for $9.99 per month and features a range of popular shows and movies, including Ted Lasso, Severance, The Morning Show, Silo, and Shrinking. For those interested in watching The Studio or other content, Apple TV+ offers several free viewing options.
