No Apple TV App on Android Phones, but a PWA is Available

There's no official Apple TV app for Android phones and tablets, which can be frustrating for users who want to access the streaming service. However, you can install the Apple TV Progressive Web App (PWA) to get a more dedicated experience.

What’s a PWA?

Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) are web applications that can be installed on your Android device's homescreen. When you use the PWA, it looks and feels like a native app, with the browser controls hidden. This provides faster access and a more immersive experience.

How to Install the Apple TV PWA

  1. Visit tv.apple.com in Chrome for Android or Chromebooks.
  2. Open the three-dot overflow menu in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap “Install app” near the bottom of the menu.
  4. Click “Install” on the confirmation box.

The PWA will appear on your homescreen with a square icon, providing one-tap access to Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass without getting lost in open browser tabs.

Why No Apple TV App for Android?

Apple only offers an Apple TV app for streaming devices and televisions running Android or Google TV. There is no mobile app for Android phones and tablets. The official recommendation is to use tv.apple.com in the Chrome or Firefox web browsers on these devices.

While the PWA works for streaming, it lacks features like offline downloads, picture-in-picture, and access to Apple TV purchases. This suboptimal experience might be part of Apple's strategy to encourage users to switch to iPhones and iPads.

Apple seems to prioritize its streaming service as a reason to own an iPhone or iPad, while televisions are the third-party form factor it does care about.
