iOS 18.4 Brings Long-Awaited Fixes to Apple Mail, Enhancing User Experience

A new iOS 18.4 setting allows the Mail app to return to the inbox list instead of moving to the next message, addressing a long-standing user request.

iOS 18.4 Introduces New Mail Setting

With the release of iOS 18.4, Apple has addressed one of the most requested features for its native Mail app on iPhone: a new setting that controls the app's behavior when deleting or moving messages. Previously, the app would automatically move to the next message in the inbox after an email was deleted or moved, often marking it as read unintentionally.

New Setting: 'Delete or Move Message Action'

  • Default Option: 'View Next Message', which keeps the old behavior of navigating to the next message.
  • New Option: 'Don’t Select a Message', which returns the user to the inbox list instead of showing another email.

This change is part of Apple's ongoing efforts to improve the Mail app, making it more user-friendly and potentially encouraging users to switch back from third-party email clients like Spark or Outlook. The setting can be found in the Settings app under Mail > Message List > Delete or Move Message Action.

iOS 18.4 is currently in beta testing stages for developers and public users, with an expected release date in April.
