iOS 18.4 Set to Enhance CarPlay EV Routing with Tesla Supercharger Support

iOS 18.4 to Address CarPlay EV Routing Limitation
Apple Maps' Electric Vehicle (EV) routing is a valuable feature in CarPlay, helping drivers plan routes that include necessary charging stops. However, it has faced a significant limitation: Apple Maps did not recognize that certain Ford vehicles, such as the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, can charge at Tesla Superchargers using an adapter for the NACS connector.
In iOS 18.4 beta, evidence suggests that this issue is being addressed. The update will include knowledge of Tesla NACS stations for these Ford vehicles, displaying messages like 'You need to use a charging adapter on this route' or 'Tesla NACS Adapter Required.' This improvement should enhance the utility of Apple Maps EV routing by providing more accurate and comprehensive charging options.
The feature is expected to be enabled in a future beta release before iOS 18.4 launches in April. Additionally, the update will include an extra row of apps on the CarPlay home screen for select vehicles.
Apple Maps' EV routing feature considers various factors such as charge level, charger availability and speed, elevation changes, and driving speed to optimize charging stops. For electric vehicle owners, the article also recommends considering rooftop solar panels for home charging through EnergySage, a service that connects users with pre-vetted solar installers.
