M3 Ultra vs M4 Max: The Quantum Leap in GPU Performance Revealed

The M3 Ultra chip's GPU outpaces its predecessor, the M4 Max, by a staggering 38% in Metal tests, making it Apple’s most powerful graphics processor yet.

Summary

Following the release of the new generation Mac Studio, early benchmark tests have revealed significant improvements in GPU performance for the M3 Ultra chip compared to its predecessors. The high-end variant of the M3 Ultra features an 80-core GPU and scored 259,668 in Metal tests, which is a 38% improvement over the M4 Max chip's score of 187,460. Compared to the previous generation M2 Ultra, the new GPU is 16% faster.

While CPU performance differences between the M3 Ultra and M4 Max are minimal (M3 Ultra leads by only 8% in multi-core tests), the M3 Ultra's superior GPU makes it ideal for graphics-intensive tasks. This marks the first time Apple has used two different chip series within the same generation of Macs, possibly to differentiate the upcoming Mac Pro from the Mac Studio.

The new Mac Studio is now available for pre-order and will be officially released on March 12.
