Meet the Visionary Young Minds Behind Apple's Swift Student Challenge 2025

Meet the brilliant young minds behind groundbreaking app playgrounds that educate, empower, and connect people globally, from preserving ancient traditions to enhancing disaster response.

Apple is highlighting four young developers who were among the Distinguished Winners of the 2025 Swift Student Challenge. These students used Apple's tools to create app playgrounds that address a variety of social and cultural needs:

  • Taiki Hamamoto: Created 'Hanafuda Tactics,' an app that teaches users how to play the traditional Japanese card game, Hanafuda, through interactive tutorials and digital decks. The aim is to preserve this cultural heritage for future generations.

  • Marina Lee: Developed 'EvacuMate,' an app designed to help individuals prepare for natural disasters like wildfires. The app provides evacuation checklists, guides on document preparation, air quality checks, and first aid instructions.

  • Luciana Ortiz Nolasco: Built 'BreakDownCosmic,' a virtual community platform that helps astronomy enthusiasts prepare for astronomical events, earn medals for completing missions, and connect with fellow stargazers, especially in areas with poor viewing conditions.

  • Nahom Worku: Created 'AccessEd,' an app aimed at improving education in resource-limited environments. The app includes a task management system, flashcard creation using machine learning, and offline functionality to support students without reliable Wi-Fi access.

The Swift Student Challenge is an annual event that encourages student developers to create innovative and impactful apps. Distinguished Winners receive a free one-year membership to the Apple Developer program, a chance to take the Swift certification exam, AirPods Max, and a personalized certificate. Top winners get an all-inclusive trip to Apple Park.
