New iPhone 16 Pro Max Price Estimate: Tariff Impact Lower Than Expected at 29% Hike

New estimates suggest that iPhones could see a price hike of just 29% due to tariffs, though the actual impact may vary based on manufacturing location and tariff duration.

New Post-Tariff iPhone Cost Estimate

A recent UBS report suggests that the price increase for upcoming iPhones due to tariffs will be less than previously estimated. The United States has imposed extreme tariffs on numerous countries, making it difficult to predict exact prices. However, the new estimates indicate a 29% increase in retail prices for iPhones assembled in China, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max with 1TB storage priced at $2,062 instead of the earlier estimate of $2,300. For iPhones assembled in India, the price increase is estimated to be around 12%, placing the iPhone 16 Pro with 128GB storage at $1,119. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 assembled in Vietnam could see a 19% price hike, potentially costing $949.

The tariffs also affect server costs, depending on their manufacturing location. AI servers built in Mexico or USMCA-compliant regions are exempt, while those from Taiwan could face a 27% increase. Apple has several options to manage these increased costs, including cost-sharing with suppliers, reducing margins, relying on inventory, and passing the costs to consumers.

The duration of the tariffs will significantly impact Apple's earnings per share (EPS). Short-term tariffs could result in a 3% to 5% hit, while long-term tariffs could lead to a 20% to 25% reduction in EPS. UBS advises investors to look at previous stock performance under similar tariffs for reassurance. Despite the current volatility, tech stocks could see a rally of up to 29% after uncertainty is priced in.

Apple's stock has already suffered due to tariff concerns, and further declines are expected if 104% tariffs on China go into effect. While companies will face challenges, consumers and the US market are likely to be hit hardest.
