NotebookLM Audio Overviews Expanding to 50+ Languages

Google is expanding the NotebookLM's Audio Overviews feature to over 50 languages, significantly increasing its accessibility beyond the initial English-only support. This update includes a wide array of languages such as Afrikaans, Hindi, Turkish, and many others.

How It Works

  • Language Selection: In NotebookLM, users can tap the settings gear icon in the top-right corner to access a new 'Output language' menu. This feature has been under development since last month.
  • Multilingual Content Creation: Users can now generate chat responses and Audio Overviews in their preferred languages, making it easier to create multilingual content or study materials.

Use Case Example

For instance, a teacher preparing a lesson on the Amazon rainforest can share resources in various languages—such as a Portuguese documentary, a Spanish research paper, and English study reports—with students. The students can then generate an Audio Overview of key insights in their preferred language, breaking down language barriers and making information more accessible.

Technical Background

The expansion is made possible by Gemini's native audio support. Google emphasizes that this is an early look at the feature and plans to continue building and refining it based on user feedback.

Additional Features

  • NotebookLM App: Google has also announced that a NotebookLM app is coming soon.
  • Web Search and Source Discovery: The platform can now search the web and discover sources for users.
  • Mind Maps: Mind Maps have been rolled out in NotebookLM, adding more functionality to the tool.
