OLED MacBook Air Delayed Until 2029, MacBook Pro Still on Track for 2026 A new supply chain report from The Elec claims that Apple has further delayed the release of an OLED MacBook Air to 2029. Previously, rumors suggested a 2028 release at the earliest. However, the higher-cost MacBook Pro is still on schedule to receive OLED screens in 2026.

Samsung Display is adding a second depositor to its production line, with the first one likely dedicated to producing OLED screens for the MacBook Pro. The total OLED capacity using both depositors is estimated at 10 million units annually, but Apple is expected to ship only between 3 million and 5 million MacBook Pro models.

In the meantime, the MacBook Air will see a screen update in 2027 with an improved LCD panel using Oxide TFT technology. This new technology promises sharper images, faster scrolling performance, and better power efficiency compared to the current anopholytic silicone (a-Si) TFT technology. Both Samsung Display and BOE are constructing production lines for these new MacBook Air screens.

The delay in the OLED MacBook Air is attributed to the high cost of production and Apple's desire to maintain a clear distinction between the lower-cost MacBook Air and the more expensive MacBook Pro.
