Phishing Campaign Shifts Gears: From Windows to Mac Users
A sophisticated phishing campaign originally targeting Windows users with fake security alerts has shifted its focus to Mac users following a major update to Microsoft Edge. The attack, which initially used compromised websites and high-quality visuals to mimic genuine Windows warnings, saw a 90% drop in effectiveness after the introduction of anti-scareware features in browsers like Edge, Chrome, and Firefox. In response, the attackers adapted their infrastructure to target Mac users, particularly those using Safari. The campaign continues to use Microsoft's Windows.net platform for hosting, despite the change in target audience. Security experts advise users to maintain good online hygiene, verify URLs and imagery, and be cautious of generic greetings or unusual requests for credentials.
