Revolutionizing On-Device AI: How Craft's Latest Update is Changing the Game for iPhone Users
Craft, a powerful documents app with AI capabilities primarily through ChatGPT, has recently updated its AI assistant feature. The update introduces the option to use local, offline AI models, specifically DeepSeek’s R1 model and Meta’s LLaMa models. The smallest R1 model uses less than 1GB of storage and can be manually downloaded by users. Early feedback suggests that a more capable R1 model with 7 billion parameters, which requires about 4GB of storage, will soon be available. Both versions work offline, ensuring user data remains on the device. Additionally, Craft is preparing to release two LLaMa models from Meta, which use less than 700MB and 2GB of storage, respectively. The app also supports server-connected AI models like ChatGPT, but the new local models hint at the future of generative AI on Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and even the Vision Pro. Craft’s vision is to offer a hybrid approach, allowing users to switch between on-device and cloud-based AI for different tasks.
