A Wichita, Kansas woman lost over $5,500 after falling for an online scam that began with a text message to her iPhone. The text claimed that her Apple ID had been used to make a purchase, and if she did not make that purchase, to call a certain number. Scammers posing as "Apple Security" then told the woman to transfer money to a Venmo card, and use the card to buy gift cards totalling $3,500 from two local Home Depot stores. The community has come together in support of the victim through a GoFundMe page, which has raised over $4,800.
