With the tenth anniversary of the hit title Sonic Mania on the horizon, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has addressed the potential for a sequel. While acknowledging that there are currently no active plans for a follow-up, Iizuka noted that the possibility remains on the table for the future. The 2017 original was a massive success that blended classic 2D gameplay with modern design sensibilities, and while the studio has recently focused on 3D entries and new 2D iterations like Sonic Superstars, the door for another retro-inspired collaboration or internal project remains a topic of interest for the franchise's leadership.
