Suing for Sustainability: Consumers Take Legal Action Against Apple Over Carbon Neutral Claims

Legal Challenge Over Apple Watch Carbon Neutrality Claims
Seven buyers of the Apple Watch Series 9, SE, and Ultra 2 have filed a lawsuit against Apple in San Jose, California federal court. The plaintiffs allege that Apple's carbon neutrality claims for these watches are false and misleading. They argue that they would not have purchased or paid as much for the devices if they had known the true nature of Apple's carbon offset projects.
Apple first made carbon neutrality claims with the launch of the Apple Watch Series 9 in 2023, which faced immediate criticism from a Chinese environmental research organization and European consumer groups. The lawsuit specifically targets Apple's use of carbon offsetting rather than genuine carbon reductions. The plaintiffs claim that the protected land projects in Kenya and China used by Apple would have remained intact regardless of Apple's involvement, thus making the company's carbon neutrality claims invalid.
Apple has committed to achieving a 100% carbon neutral footprint by 2030 but has not commented on this specific lawsuit. The case appears to be more about financial compensation for the plaintiffs and their attorneys rather than environmental concerns or user impact.
