Tata and Foxconn Open New iPhone Factories in India: A Move Away from China

Two New iPhone Factories Open in India
Apple's strategic shift towards diversifying its manufacturing base continues with the opening of two new iPhone factories in India. The first plant, operated by Tata, began production at a recently acquired facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, and is currently producing older iPhone models. This move follows Tata's acquisition of an ex-Wistron iPhone assembly plant and their ongoing efforts to become a significant player in Apple's supply chain.
The second facility, a $2.6 billion plant by Foxconn, is on the verge of operational status in Bengaluru, Karnataka. It is expected to start with a single assembly line for producing the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e models and will eventually create 50,000 jobs when fully operational in 2027.
These developments are part of Apple's long-term strategy to reduce dependency on Chinese manufacturing. The shift has been motivated by factors such as supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, periodic factory closures in China for electricity conservation, and ongoing US-China trade tensions. While the tariffs have accelerated these moves, Apple remains committed to expanding its production capabilities outside of China, with a particular focus on India.
