The 100TB Memory Miracle: Cloudflare Reclaims Massive RAM via Software Magic

Cloudflare just proved that smarter code beats bigger hardware by reclaiming a staggering 100TB of memory through pure software optimization.

Cloudflare has achieved a major technical milestone by optimizing its Big Pineapple DNS caching platform, the backbone of the popular 1.1.1.1 resolver. By re-engineering how the system handles data storage and cache management, the company reduced its total memory consumption by more than 50 percent. This optimization effort freed up a total of 100 terabytes of RAM across Cloudflare's entire server fleet without the need for additional hardware investments. The freed resources allow the global network to handle more traffic and provide enhanced stability for its DNS Firewall and other security services.
