The End of an Era: Skype Officially Shuts Down on May 5, 2025

Microsoft is officially shutting down Skype on May 5, 2025, marking the end of over two decades for the video call platform. Skype was once the go-to option for video calls before competitors like Zoom and FaceTime emerged. The decline began during the pandemic when Zoom gained popularity. Microsoft has been transitioning users to Teams, its replacement for Skype, to focus on faster innovation. Until April 3, 2025, users can still make calls with available credit, but subscriptions will end on that date. Skype chats and history will be automatically moved to Teams, and data can also be exported if needed.
