TSMC Accelerates US Chip Production, Despite Criticism

TSMC, despite initial delays with its first US chip plant in Arizona, has announced that future plants will be constructed and operationalized at a much faster pace. This accelerated timeline is expected to enable the production of 'Made in America' Apple chips for newer devices, albeit these won't be the cutting-edge models initially produced in Taiwan. The company plans to bring a 3nm plant online by 2028 and a 2nm plant before 2030, which will help close the gap with Taiwanese production capabilities. However, Pat Gelsinger, former Intel CEO, remains skeptical, arguing that without significant R&D investment in the US, TSMC's efforts won't lead to genuine semiconductor leadership for the country.
