UK Regulator Calls Out Apple for Stifling Browser Innovation, but Takes No Action

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has released its full report on Apple’s policies regarding browser engines and Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). The CMA claims that Apple stifles innovation in the browser market by requiring all third-party browsers on iOS to use WebKit. While Apple argues this is for security and privacy, companies like Meta, Microsoft, Mozilla, and Vivaldi claim they want to offer additional features and controls that are currently blocked. Despite these findings, the CMA will not impose any regulations at this time due to new powers granted under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, which allows it to designate firms with 'strategic market status' (SMS) and impose forward-looking requirements. The report also notes that in-app browsers often circumvent Apple's privacy controls, which could pose security risks for users.
