YouTube's Music Focus Grows with New Premium Lite Tier and AI-Powered Storytelling

YouTube Launches Premium Lite: More Users Upgrading Than Downgrading, Platform Eyes Music Dominance

YouTube has introduced a new subscription tier called YouTube Premium Lite, priced at $7.99 per month in the US, which offers most of the benefits of the full YouTube Premium service except for ad-free YouTube Music and the ability to download content or play it in the background. Despite these limitations, early pilot testing revealed that more users upgraded from Lite to the full Premium plan than downgraded from Premium to Lite. This suggests that YouTube sees Premium Lite as a way to attract new subscribers who might eventually upgrade.

YouTube also announced that it now has 125 million YouTube Music and Premium subscribers globally, including those on trial plans, with a goal of becoming the top revenue contributor to the music industry. The company's Global Head of Music, Lyor Cohen, stated that YouTube aims to become 'the best place for every music fan and every artist.'

To support this mission, YouTube highlighted its global reach, which enables fans to discover new music on Shorts (which now generates over 70 billion daily views) and connected TVs. The company is also investing in AI tools like Dream Screen in Shorts, powered by Google DeepMind's Veo 2 model, to make it easier for artists and fans to create visual stories with music.
