Instagram Reels Flooded with Graphic Content: Meta Blames Error, Not Policy Change
Summary
Instagram users encountered a surge of violent and sexually explicit content in their Reels, which Meta, the parent company, attributed to an error rather than a policy change regarding moderation. According to CNBC, this issue was observed on Wednesday night in the U.S., with posts containing sensitive material such as dead bodies and graphic injuries, despite the presence of Instagram’s “Sensitive Content Control” being set to the highest level.
Meta issued an apology for the mistake, stating that it had been fixed. The company also acknowledged that they are transitioning their content moderation strategy. Mark Zuckerberg recently announced a reduction in automated checks on content, opting to focus on severe policy violations like terrorism and child exploitation. For less serious issues, Meta will rely more on user reports rather than proactive scanning.
Zuckerberg highlighted that the previous approach led to too many errors and unnecessary censorship. The new strategy involves tuning their systems to require a higher degree of confidence before taking action against content.
