TSMC Pledges $100 Billion for US Chip Manufacturing Expansion
TSMC to Invest $100 Billion in US Chip Production Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), a major supplier of iPhone processors, is reportedly planning a significant expansion in the United States with a $100 billion investment. The investment, expected to be announced by President Trump before the end of March 3, 2025, aims to boost chip-making production over the next four years. This announcement follows TSMC's initial $12 billion investment in Arizona in 2020 and aligns with the administration's push for increased domestic semiconductor manufacturing.
The funds are earmarked for either constructing new factories or expanding existing ones in Arizona. TSMC’s move comes after Apple announced a separate $500 billion investment in US manufacturing, although some of this amount may represent existing commitments rather than new investments.
President Trump has previously criticized the CHIPS Act and its support for TSMC, suggesting tariffs on semiconductor imports as an alternative strategy. Despite these tensions, TSMC is continuing to build out its Arizona facilities. However, the construction has faced criticism over safety concerns, with reports of fatalities and cultural differences in work practices between Taiwan and US employees.
