Apple's Proposal for Shorter SSL/TLS Certificate Lifespan Faces Backlash from System Administrators

System administrators are voicing their objections to a new proposal by Apple that would significantly decrease the lifespan of SSL/TLS certificates for websites from 398 days down to just 45 days. The proposal has sparked outrage from sysadmins who argue that more frequent certificate updates could create unnecessary workload and potential issues for website maintenance and security.

Apple has proposed shortening the validity of security certificates used by websites from 398 days to just 45 days. SSL/TLS certificates ensure a user's connection to a website is secure in browsers like Safari. Currently, certificates have a lifespan of about 13 months. The proposal would decrease the maximum lifespan to 200 days after September 2025, then to 100 days one year later, and finally to 45 days by April 2027.
