Big Tech Fumes as Meta Bungles Court Document Redactions

Big Tech Upset at Meta's Poorly Executed Court Document Redactions
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is facing significant backlash from competitors due to its failure to properly redact sensitive court documents. During an antitrust hearing with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), slides containing competitive assessments were made public without adequate redaction.
Lawyers from Apple, Google, and Snap expressed frustration over the mishandling of their data. Apple's lawyer emphasized that this lapse in security erodes trust, suggesting that Apple can no longer rely on Meta to protect internal information. Snap's attorney accused Meta of having a 'cavalier approach' and 'casual disregard' for the sensitive data, adding that Meta would have shown more care if it were its own data.
The case has seen ongoing tensions between Meta and Snap, with each side accusing the other of mishandling confidential information. Meta argues that it does not hold a monopoly on social media platforms, highlighting the presence of competitors like Apple's iMessage, which is overwhelmingly preferred by iPhone users. The FTC may consider breaking up Instagram and WhatsApp from Meta if it rules against the company.
