Google's DeX-like Desktop Mode for Android: A Game-Changer in Mobile Productivity

Google is developing a DeX-like desktop mode for Android phones, allowing users to connect their devices to an external display and access a full-windowed desktop experience with keyboard and mouse support.

Google Working on DeX-like Desktop Mode for Android Phones

Google is developing a desktop mode similar to Samsung's DeX for Android phones, which allows a phone or tablet to power a desktop experience when connected to an external display. This development comes after the introduction of DisplayPort mirroring in Android 14 QPR3 and desktop windowing on the Pixel Tablet in Android 15 QPR1.

With the latest Android 16 beta, a new feature called 'desktop windowing on secondary displays' has been enabled. When connected to an external display, a Pixel 8 Pro shows an Android Taskbar with pinned apps, recent apps, and launcher access. The setup includes time and status bar icons at the top, dual-column Quick Settings, and notifications. Apps can be resized, moved around, and placed side-by-side, and users can interact with them using a physical keyboard and trackpad.

The timing of this feature's official launch is uncertain, but it aligns with Google's broader strategy to integrate more Android capabilities into ChromeOS and vice versa. This could potentially lead to proper laptops or convertibles running a desktop version of Android. However, the strategic direction seems somewhat unclear, as many users are accustomed to using dedicated laptops for their desktop computing needs.

There is speculation that this development might primarily benefit Samsung, given its existing DeX technology. For those who believe in a future where phones can power laptops, a potential solution could be a laptop shell with all components except the SoC, connected wirelessly to the phone.
