Reviving the Past: Running a Modern LLM on a 2005 PowerBook G4

A software developer proves it's possible to run a modern large language model on a 2005 PowerBook G4, though the processing speed is significantly slower compared to modern hardware.

A software developer has demonstrated that it's possible to run a modern large language model (LLM) on older hardware like a 2005 PowerBook G4, though the performance is significantly slower compared to more recent devices. The developer, Andrew Rossignol, managed to get the Llama2 LLM inference running on the PowerBook G4 by making improvements to the llama2.c project, including porting it to run on a 32-bit big-endian processor. Despite the limitations of using only 1 GB of memory and a 32-bit address space, the PowerBook G4 was able to generate simple outputs like whimsical children's stories. While the performance is far from practical for everyday use, the project showcases the potential of older hardware in running modern AI models.
