Sergey Brin Urges Google to Turbocharge Efforts in the Final Race to AGI

Sergey Brin Urges Google to Turbocharge AI Efforts
In an internal memo sent to the Gemini team, Google co-founder Sergey Brin emphasized the urgency of accelerating efforts towards achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). He noted that competition has intensified and that the final race to AGI is underway. Brin believes Google possesses all the necessary components to win this race but must significantly enhance its efforts.
Key points from Brin's memo include:
- Efficiency through AI: The Gemini team should aim to be the most efficient coders and AI scientists by leveraging their own AI tools, which will improve over time.
- Increased Workload: Employees are encouraged to work at least every weekday, with 60 hours a week considered optimal for productivity. However, Brin cautioned against overworking to avoid burnout.
Context of AGI Development
AGI has long been the ultimate goal in AI research, though there is no consensus on its exact definition. In November 2023, Google DeepMind proposed a framework for classifying the capabilities and behavior of AGI models. Competitors like OpenAI have also made significant strides, with CEO Sam Altman stating that they know how to build traditional AGI and are now focusing on superintelligence.
Google has been transparent about its pursuit of AGI, reiterating this goal during the announcement of Gemini 2.0 in December.
