Sit-Stand Desks: A Game-Changer for Productivity and Health
Making the switch to a sit-stand desk dramatically improved my productivity and wellness, proving to be one of the best office-related decisions I've made.

In October 2024, the author decided to switch to a sit-stand desk after realizing that their large custom-made desk was no longer necessary as they were moving to a smaller apartment and had fewer items to accommodate on the desk.
The author chose the Ikea Mittzon sit-stand desk, which has a simple switch panel with two memory positions and up/down buttons for manual adjustment. They discovered three pleasant surprises after using the desk for over a month:
- The author used the standing feature more frequently and for longer periods than expected, switching between sitting and standing at roughly 30-40 minute intervals.
- The adjustability of the desk was useful for more purposes than just sitting versus standing, such as raising the chair and desk together or matching the level of a nearby worktop in their new apartment.
- Most importantly, the sit-stand desk greatly improved the author's back pain by prompting them to change positions when they started feeling low-level pain after sitting or standing for around 30-40 minutes.
