Sonos Shuts Down Ambitious Pinewood Streaming Device Project

Sonos pulls the plug on its highly anticipated streaming video player, codenamed Pinewood, redirecting focus to app improvements and customer recovery.

Sonos has announced the cancellation of its streaming video player project, codenamed Pinewood, despite it being in development since 2023 and already in beta testing. The decision was made during an all-staff call led by interim CEO Tom Conrad, as part of a broader effort to refocus company resources. This comes after a series of setbacks for Sonos, including the release of a faulty iOS app update in early 2024 that led to the resignation of then-CEO Patrick Spence. The company now plans to concentrate on regaining customer trust and improving its existing products, with no major new releases planned for 2025.
