Transform UI Mockups into Code with Gemini in Android Studio
Transform UI mockups into functional Android code with Gemini's new multimodal capabilities in Android Studio.

Gemini in Android Studio Now Supports Multimodal Inputs for UI Mockups
Google announced today that Gemini, the AI-powered assistant in Android Studio, now supports multimodal inputs, allowing developers to attach images directly to their prompts. This feature was first teased at I/O 2024 and is available in the canary version of Android Studio Narwhal.
Key Features:
- Image Support: Developers can upload JPEG or PNG images, including simple wireframes and high-fidelity mockups, with Google recommending images that have strong color contrasts for better results.
- Code Generation: Gemini can understand these visual designs and transform them into functional Jetpack Compose code. Examples include creating screens that closely match the provided images, ensuring correct functionality and interactions.
- Initial Design Scaffold: The generated code serves as a starting point, requiring further refinement from developers, such as correcting drawable imports and importing icons.
- Bug Identification and Resolution: Gemini can analyze problematic UI screenshots and suggest potential solutions, with the option to include relevant code snippets for more precise assistance.
- Documentation and Explanation: Upload architecture diagrams to get detailed explanations or documentation, similar to the Gemini Astra glasses example from last year.
Developers can download Android Studio Narwhal canary today to try out these new multimodal features.
