In 1999, Steve Jobs unveiled the first PlayStation emulator for Mac at Macworld Expo, promoting it as proof that Macs were great gaming machines.

In 1999, Steve Jobs unveiled Connectix's Virtual Game Station (VGS) on stage at Macworld Expo. VGS was the first PlayStation emulator capable of running games at full speed for any platform. Apple promoted it as part of their strategy to have the best gaming machine in the world. But Sony filed a lawsuit against Connectix for copyright infringement, which Connectix won. As part of the settlement, Sony bought the emulation software to shut it down. In 2024, however, game emulators are finally allowed on the App Store
