Boox announces Palma 2 with fingerprint sensor and Android 13

Boox today announced a new generation of its phone-sized e-reader with the Palma 2.

The Boox Palma 2 has the same 6.13-inch Carta 1200 display (824 x 1648, 300 PPI) with a “light sensor” for adjusting brightness and color temperature — manual controls also available — with various refresh modes: HD (for reading), Balanced (skimming), Fast (scrolling/browsing the web), and Ultrafast (video).

It still features 128GB of storage (with microSD card slot) and 6GB of RAM, but an “upgraded Octa-core CPU” is touted. There’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 with people liking to use the Palma as an audio player, with dual speakers (front and bottom-facing) onboard. There are also dual microphones on the top and bottom.

Meanwhile, it’s now powered by Android 13 with the “pre-installed Google Play Store” for access to your usual apps, and has a fingerprint sensor in the power button for better authentication. The rocker below that pulls triple duty for page turns, scrolling, and volume. The other side features a customizable “smart button” that accepts short and long presses, as well as double-click.

Other specs that remain the same include the 16MP rear camera (with flash) for document scanning, 3,950mAh battery, 8 mm thinness, and 170~ g weight. It’s also still “water-repellent” for “unexpected spills and splashes.”

The Boox Palma 2 is available for pre-order at $279.99 in black or white with a textured rear, while various cases are offered. It’s currently sold out in the US at shop.boox.com.
