F1: The Last Lap? Apple TV+ Steps Back from Big Screen Releases

Apple TV+ continues to shift away from theatrical releases, with 'F1' starring Brad Pitt as one more test after a string of box office disappointments. If the film performs well at the box office, it could have implications for Apple's future movie distribution strategy.

Apple TV+ is continuing to step back from high-profile theatrical releases of its films. Following poor box office returns for movies including "Killers of the Flower Moon", Apple has curtailed plans for most theatrical debuts.

The forthcoming racing drama "F1" starring Brad Pitt will be the next test. In June 2025, it's slated to be the last major theatrical release from Apple in a co-distribution deal with Warner Bros. The budget is believed to have been $300 million and how well "F1" performs at the box office will inform if more films skip cinemas in future.
