Gboard Unveils Unified Color Scheme in Dynamic Theme Update

Gboard's Dynamic Color theme gets a consistent color scheme update, enhancing uniformity but potentially reducing vibrancy.

Gboard for Android Updates Dynamic Color Theme

Gboard, the popular keyboard app by Google, has officially rolled out updates to its Dynamic Color theme after a period of testing in 2024. The update aims to create a more uniform and consistent look across the keyboard.

Key Changes:

  • Color Uniformity: Prior to this update, Gboard keys had different color sets for letters, symbols like Shift, Emoji/Comma, Period, and Backspace, as well as the ?123 and Enter keys. Now, these keys share a more uniform color scheme, with the 2×2 grid icon in the top-left corner also matching this new look.
  • Consistency Across Devices: The changes apply to both phones and tablets, ensuring a consistent user experience regardless of the device.
  • Aesthetic Impact: While the update makes the keyboard more uniform, it can lead to a less vibrant appearance depending on the wallpaper. Conversely, the dark theme may appear even darker with these changes.

Rollout Details:

  • Initial Testing: The updates began testing in late October 2024 in the beta version of Gboard before moving to the stable channel.
  • Current Status: As of February 2025, the Dynamic Color theme updates are widely available with Gboard version 14.9 on both stable and beta channels.

Additional Tips:

  • Forcing Update: If users don't see the changes, they can force stop Gboard from App info settings.
  • Theme Switching: Changing between system light and dark themes might also trigger the update.

Other Updates:

  • Emoji Kitchen Redesign: Gboard has been rolling out a redesigned hand emoji and an 'Undo' button.
  • Icon Change in Beta: For users on the beta channel, the 2×2 grid icon is now filled without its circular housing, breaking symmetry with the voice search icon.
